I was transferred to the active reserve for the next six years. I lived in Rockaway Beach, NY and I was assigned to Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. Many of the better private schools will have a wide range of training including several weeks of practice at backing up the truck, classroom coverage of everything from log books to maps and routing to air brakes and vehicle inspection. They will also have several weeks of training out on the local roadways. Make sure they will give you the necessary training to get ALL of your endorsements including hazmat, tankers, doubles and triples, and people (buses). Make sure you get ALL of these. It only requires a very short written test and can also severely limit your job opportunities if you leave them out.
The most important thing to do when preparing your resume is to be honest. You will also want to make sure that you have a professional looking resume. If you don't type, have someone type it for you. Don't turn in a hand-written resume! Your resume will show your past few jobs and any education you have had. Additionally, you will have some time to spare in the cities you go, so don't worry about learning only the docks, parking lots and warehouses. If you are a sociable person and you don't like routine, this job is made for you. You will never eat at the same hour. Sometimes you will not even get to sleep. But that shouldn't be a problem since you can taste new out-of-the-ordinary food every couple of days and sleep in the comfort of different hotels.
